General Reinsurance Africa Ltd (a subsidiary of General Reinsurance AG) currently offers an opportunity for an Actuarial Analyst in the Research & Analytics team in our Cape Town office.

Your Role

This is a challenging and rewarding role involving multiple work areas both locally and internationally:

• Internal and external research relating to pricing, products, underwriting, claims and other areas within life insurance
• Understanding data and applying modern analytical techniques to the data
• Implementing practical changes based on research and analytics in various areas of business
• Support of analysis and assessment of life and health reinsurance portfolios for the purposes of risk management, experience studies, planning and quotations
• Supporting large research projects and surveys
• Presentations and training measures for clients
• Marketing activities, including giving presentations at conferences and writing articles
• This is not only a South African role and responsibilities include supporting business and clients in the United Kingdom and Canada. In addition, this role will involve working with colleagues from the United States, Germany and other countries.

Your Profile

We are looking for top applicants that have graduated with degrees in Actuarial Science and have completed or have received exemptions for the Core Technical examinations.

Applicants should have experience in applying statistical and machine learning techniques in financial services or related business to solve problems in practical and implementable way.

Applicants with qualifications in statistics, mathematics or computer sciences with relevant experience may also be considered.

Requirements

• Good skills in actuarial modelling, data and statistical analysis
• Good online research skills
• Commercial awareness
• Excellent numerical and analytical skills
• Excellent IT skills (MS Office, SQL Server, Working with large datasets)
• Strong statistical software skills (R including machine learning, for example GLMs)
• Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to work effectively as part of a team, deal with people at all levels and in all areas of the business and engage with clients
• Strong communication skills including verbal and written skills with the ability to summarise and explain complex information clearly and concisely
• Willingness to travel locally (and internationally from time to time)
