Junior Underwriter

General Reinsurance Africa Ltd (a subsidiary of General Reinsurance AG) currently has an excellent opportunity for a Junior Underwriter in Property Facultative based in our Johannesburg office.

Your Role:

Underwriting and marketing Property facultative business within the Sub Saharan African team. The role holder will be responsible for soliciting new business, maintaining client relationships, handling of accounts, underwriting and transacting facultative business.

This position offers a continuing variety of tasks. Relationship management is a key element of the job. The successful candidate will negotiate the transfer of risk, pricing and terms directly with the client while being provided the opportunity to travel and meet face-to-face with clients.

Job Description:

Technical underwriting of property facultative business

  • Understanding and applying Gen Re’s underwriting philosophy, rules and guidelines
  • Understanding underwriting tools, rates and pricing structures
  • Proficiency in understanding contracts, policy forms terms and conditions
  • Ensuring clear, concise and accurate documentation (internal and external)
  • Understanding topical underwriting issues

  • Ensuring teamwork within client teams, branch and within any other cross branch, cross unit or project team
  • Participating in and contributing to training and coaching initiatives

You will work with key members of the team whilst you will undertake training. You will have contact with our clients and close relationships with other internal teams.


  • University Graduate
  • Advanced IT skills: Excel, Power Point, and Word
  • The role requires proficient use of various internal systems (TUD, KIWI, OP, Salesforce, Documentum, ACCO, etc.)
  • Autonomy, self-motivation, good organisational skills, problem solving and result orientation are essential
  • We are looking for a team player and good communicator
  • Ability to travel internationally
  • Driving licence required

Additional relevant information

  • Reinsurance industry experience
  • ACII (or pursuing ACII) preferred
